About PSLC
Positive Steps Learning Center is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt not-for-profit organization that will offer educational and social activities to young adults with physical and developmental impairments in Brevard County, Florida.
Positive Steps Learning Center's goals are to offer innovative educational activities, promote pro-social friendships, and strengthen interpersonal relationships amongst our participants. All of these components will help to offer each student a sense of hope and independence. Through personal relationships, students participating in our program can develop or continue to follow a path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Those living with developmental impairments have numerous obstacles to encounter including poverty, discrimination and low academic success. These attributes can lead to destructive habits or high-risk behaviors. Many of these young people have lost faith in the possibility of leading productive lives. At Positive Steps Learning Center, it is our mission to empower these young people so that they will have the necessary tools and supports to make the right choices in their lives.
Positive Steps Learning Center is a program that is in direct response to the growing number of developmentally impaired youth who do not have any social or educational outlets outside of school. The goal of this program is to offer the developmentally impaired youth a positive learning, social and supportive environment in hopes of helping them to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives.
During the school year, Positive Steps Learning Center will be open five days a week between the hours of 3:00PM and 7:00PM. During this time, homework assistance and supplementary educational activities will be offered, in conjunction with an array of recreational activities, including sports, board games and arts and crafts. Counseling will also be offered to each student and their immediate family members.
Our six-week summer program will be open five days a week as well, however our hours of operation will be extended and weekly outings in the community will be incorporated.
This is a year round program whereby students will participate in planned weekly activities that are geared towards improving social skills, building confidence and giving a sense of belonging. Students will be given the opportunity to choose from a number of recreational activites that are meant to enhance social skills and independence.
Positive Steps Learning Center Inc. will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people and the community at large.
